Ipswich Town defender Cameron Burgess scored an own-goal for Australia as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Japan in World Cup qualifying.

The 28-year-old, who was an unused substitute for the 3-1 win against China last Thursday, came into the starting lineup on the left side of a back three. His side managed just 29% possession and one shot in the first half, but took the lead when St. Truiden's Shogo Taniguchi scored an own-goal in the 58th minute.

The hosts struck back, however, equalising with 14 minutes to spare as Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma rushed down the wing. It bobbled past everyone in the box but hit the onrushing Burgess, who flicked it into his own net to make it 1-1.

The result sees the Socceroos stay second in Group C for now, five points behind the Samurai Blue.

Burgess' international duty is over for now, with his start against Japan taking his total number of senior caps up to 11. Tony Popovic's side are back in action next month when they host Saudi Arabia and travel to Bahrain.

Arijanet Muric (Kosovo) and Omari Hutchinson (England Under-21) could be in action this evening.
