Five-handicap Mel Pipe set a new course record off the Felixstowe Ferry black tees of five under par 67 in his second round in the Coronation Cup.

He won the main trophy, on handicap, by seven shots from John Whitby (Ipswich), now in the ranks of the seniors, who had rounds of 74 and 72 off his handicap of three.

Pipe also had the best 36-hole scratch score on a day when the sun was shining and there was not much wind.

He ended one shot ahead of Steve Adkins of Stock Brook with 19-year-old Adam Sheldrake of the home club in third place with rounds of 72 and 73.

A highlight was a hole in one, an albatross, by James Tyler of Ipswich on the 305-yard par four third hole. He used a three-wood.

Only two previous aces in competitive play have been recorded at this hole. One was by Ben Sayers of Felixstowe Ferry with a driver and the other by the late John Cook, a Felixstowe Ferry legend.

Brett Vale have kept much the same squad which has been them beat Thorpeness by 15 holes, Ufford Park by five and Diss by seven.

On Sunday Alan Ngai comes into the side in place of Ross Christie who is on holiday.

Bury St Edmunds made hard work of their four-hole second round victory over The Suffolk. Then they beat Woodbridge by seven.

A Stenson Shield defeat by Aldeburgh suggested that they may not have an air of invincibility although they start as favourites.

Haverhill look well balanced. They beat Newton Green by 12 holes and Stowmarket by four holes. Both were good scalps. Harvey Bavester steps up in place of Liam Merritt.

Gorleston’s first round match against Felixstowe Ferry has been their toughest. They won by five holes. Since then they hve beaten Halesworth by 28 and Bungay by 17.

Team captain Danny Perring has named a strong side. Experienced players like Steve Crosby, John Maddock and Geraint Amos are not included.
