A man has died following a single-vehicle crash on a major road in west Suffolk last night, police have confirmed.

Police and the ambulance service were called to a crash on the A143 near Wickhambrook at around 10.25pm last night (Saturday, December 18).

They arrived to find a Renault Clio had left the road and overturned in a field.

The driver, a man in his 30s, was declared dead at the scene.

A road closure was put in place between Wickhambrook and Depden while an investigation was carried out. The road reopened just before 5am this morning.

Mike Lavelle, vice-chairman of Wickhambrook Parish Council, said it was particularly sad news so close to Christmas.

"It's always sad when somebody dies on the roads," he said. "Especially so at this time of year.

"There will be a family devastated somewhere because of this. It's really, really sad."

Mr Lavelle added the road was "notorious", and said the parish and county councils were working on putting new speed limits in place.

He said: "The parish council, along with the county council, have been pushing for a restricted speed limit through the dip where the Plumbers Arms pub used to be.

"I think it's 40 already, but the County Council had been working on putting another restricted speed limit in place."

Officers are asking anyone who witnessed the crash, or has any information about the incident, to contact the Serious Collision team at Suffolk Constabulary quoting reference 342 of December 18.
