The first Christmas market held in a town centre street proved to be a success - with hopes of more events in the future.

The Walk in Ipswich hosted its first Christmas market event on Sunday with a number of stalls and stores opening to help people with their festive shopping.

The event was organised by Will Hamer and Jenny Needham, owners of Threads For All, after the cancellation of the Saints Christmas Market due to Ipswich Town's home match against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, November 24.

The Saints market was cancelled several weeks before it was due to take place.

Mr Hamer said: "The market was a huge success.

"We were very busy all day and it was a great atmosphere.

"The stall holders were all very happy with how busy it was with lots of people coming down."

A number of items were on offer throughout the day - including homemade art, crafts, gifts, fashion for adults and children, pet accessories, preservatives and a mulled wine stand.

Mr Hamer added: "We would love to do these markets seasonally going forward.

"We are hopeful we can continue them."

The Saints Christmas Market has been a regular fixture in the calendar in Ipswich for several years, but was forced into a cancellation just over a month before it was due to take place.

Stalls were booked and orders for shutting the roads had been obtained by the time it was cancelled.

Cathy Frost is an organiser of the event and runs the Loveone shop in St Peter's Street.

Speaking about the cancellation, she said: "On one level it is a bit disappointing but it's fantastic for the town that we've got Manchester United coming and that we're in the Premier League. We just have to get on with it."
