'Disgusted' Ipswich Town fans have hit out at a decision to hike parking charges to £15 on match days saying the rise will badly impact disabled visitors.

The new price will come into effect on Tuesday, December 3, at the Ipswich Borough Council owned West End car park, Portman Road and Princes Street.

More than 1,000 car parking spaces will be subject to the new tariff which will be in operation three hours before kick off and an hour afterwards - meaning tens of thousands could be raised each home game.

Another fan who has been supporting the blues for 50 years said that the move was "greedy" which has "taken fans completely for granted."

Ipswich Borough Council announced the changes to premium parking on match days back in September, saying that most premier league clubs have an average of £35 parking fee for close proximity car park.

Fans spotted the signs showing the new fees ahead of the Tractor Boys' clash with Manchester United, where they were held to a 1-1 draw.

The fee comes in ahead of back to back home games at Portman Road starting with Crystal Palace on December 3 and Bournemouth on December 8.

Fans of Ipswich Town did not take the news well, with one fan labelling the price hike as "disgusting" (Image: Archant) Councillor Jane Riley, Ipswich Borough Council’s portfolio holder for culture and customers, said: “There is significant congestion in the area around the Portman Road stadium when there is a home match being played.

"Those prepared to pay the premium will have parking very close to the stadium while the charge may also encourage local fans to travel to games via other means such as park & ride, bus, cycling or walking.

“Premium tariffs are common at car parks close to other Premier League grounds on home match days."

66-year-old Mary Scrivener also did not support the fee.

The town fan said: "I am completely disgusted, it is just ripping off the fans.

"Supporters pay for their season tickets and everything else they shouldn't have to worry about a huge hike in prices for the car park.

"I think the council are totally tone deaf, I think the town itself is falling down around us, we should encouraging people into the town, even if it is just for the football."

Mrs Scrivener added her concerns for those with mobility issues.

She said: "And what about people who struggle with mobility because it's handy for them to park down there so close to the ground, it's really off-putting.

"They could have waited a year to see how we got on in the Premier League but a few months in and they are charging £15."

Another Ipswich Town fan Paul Turner added; "I do not agree with the price hike, the cost of my parking at Portman road will triple in price.

"I'm also disabled and cannot walk any great distances, I can just manage to walk across Portman road to Sir Alf Ramsey stand.

"I will have to think long and hard about where I can park close to the ground."
