The crime rate in Ipswich continues to be above the regional and national averages according to a new update.

According to the website crimerate.co.uk using figures from data.police.uk the crime rate in the Suffolk town is 20% higher than the regional crime rate and 12% higher than the national average for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

The figures show that shoplifting, violence and sexual offences and theft from a person are significantly above the Suffolk and East of England average.

 According to the figures the rate of thefts from a person is almost double the national average while the rate of violence and sexual offences is more than double and shoplifting almost treble the national average.

Over the last three years the rate of vehicle crime, possession of a weapon and criminal damage and arson have increased are above the national average.

In contrast despite starting from a high base the amount of shoplifting is decreasing as are the trends in relation to robbery and drugs offences. 

With 1.0 representing the national average, the crime rate in Ipswich is 2.37 compared to 0.78 in the rest of Suffolk compared to 0.94 in the East of England as a whole.

In the 12 months to September there were 5,842 reports of violence and sexual offences, 1,394 shoplifting offences, 1,218 criminal damage and arson and 1,213 reports of anti-social behaviour. 

However, the crime rate in Ipswich is lower than in Lowestoft - with the latter’s crime rate being 109.45 compared to the former's 90.38.

Ipswich is also significantly safer than larger cities such as Sheffield, Nottingham, Liverpool, Bristol and Birmingham, the figures show.

The crime rate in the town has also fallen with the current figure of 90.38 representing a fall from 100.16 last year and 107.57 in 2022 and is the lowest figure since 2014.
