Ipswich leaders and shop owners have spoken about the benefits that a big name chain opening in the town centre will have in the future.

Flannels opened in Butter Market on October 31 taking over the former BHS building which has been vacant since 2016.

Ipswich Borough Councillor for the Alexandra Ward, John Cook, said: "It seems like a long time ago, that this new Flannels store was announced, and it's great that it's finally here.

"I know from talking to town centre retailers, how tough things have been in recent years.

"The future of our high street is a mix of national brands and local independent operators.

"Flannels helps strengthen our local shopping offer, and I look forward to seeing more new shops opening."

Lee Walker, CEO of Ipswich Central, added: "Flannels opening not only fills a long-standing vacant unit but brings a premium clothing brand to the town.

"With several new businesses opening in the town centre recently, this is a great reason for people to visit new stores in Ipswich in the lead up to Christmas."

The shop is the first of five to open in the former BHS building, with Sports Direct, GAME, USC and Evans Cycles set to take over the other part of the shop.

The opening has also come to delight of other shops in the town.

The Italian Shirt Shop in St Peters Street took to Facebook to express their delight, saying: "This is a fantastic addition to our community and speaks volumes about the growing belief in Ipswich as a destination for premium retail.

"Here’s to Ipswich continuing to grow as a hub for quality, choice, and fantastic shopping experiences."

Work continues on the next door units for the other shops, which are set to open before Christmas.
