Walking footballers from Ipswich are about to pull on their boots and play for 24 hours non-stop all in aid of a good cause.

Whitton Walking Football Club are one of the teams due to take part in the fundraiser on Friday, November 15, at Whitton Sports and Community Centre to raise money for Children in Need.

So far £1,575 of the £5,000 goal has been raised, with the event being described as "a chance for us oldies to raise money for our young people doing what we love ..playing football."

Other walking football teams involved include Coplestonians , AFC Kesgrave, Ipswich Walking Football Club men's and ladies’ teams, Ipswich Foundation, Fit Kicks, ActivLives ,Gainsborough and Whitton Badminton Club over 50s.

Rather than playing against other teams each club will divide itself into two teams to play amongst each other.

Whitton will start their first match at midday on the Friday and play until 2pm before restarting at midnight and playing until 2 am.

Organiser Glen Parker said that it was a test of endurance rather than a competition and had taken months of planning.

He said: "It's not a competition as such, it's just a bit of fun for Children in Need.

"It's been planned for six or seven months. We had a word with Whitton Sports Centre to see if they could help, obviously they've got to have enough staff to help. It's pretty much come together."

Mr Parker added that some of the clubs will have more players that will make the challenge of playing in the early hours easier.

"It'll be 5 a side matches so if a club has 15 players they'll keep swapping over because if they've got 10 that would be really difficult playing two hours non-stop."
