Experts have offered their advice on how to support your furry friend ahead of fireworks this weekend.

With Guy Fawkes Day set for Tuesday, November 5 and displays across Suffolk set for this weekend, Michelle Clark, who founded Dogs On The Street has issued a list of tells which may indicate that your pooch is not enjoying the festivities.

According to Dogs On The Street, there are certain signs of anxiety in dogs to look out for.

These include: if your dog starts whining or barking, is unusually clingy, excessively panting, holding their tail down between their legs, hiding or trying to escape, pacing up and down, or has lost their appetite.

However, the non-profit organisation has also given some top tips to calm your dogs if they need it.

  • Create a safe haven - A snug space filled with blankets, treats, and their favourite toys to help distract them from the loud noises.
  • Put on TV or music - Simply turning up the volume on the television, playing white noise, or music from a speaker can help disguise the noise from the fireworks, helping to calm your dog.
  • Change up your walking routine - Take your dogs for a longer walk during the daylight hours so that they feel satisfied during the evening when firework displays typically start.
  • Recognise the needs of your dog - Every dog is different so it’s important that you understand the needs of your individual pup.
  • Avoid telling them off - Your dog may display unwanted behaviour because of the fireworks but you should avoid disciplining them for this as it can only lead to greater distress.
  • Speak to your vet - If you’ve noticed that your dog is showing significant signs of fear and anxiety during fireworks, speak to your vet.
