A campaigner for the revival of the Broomhill Lido in Ipswich has been recognised for his outstanding contributions to the community with an honorary degree from the University of Suffolk.

Michael Read MBE, who has dedicated 22 years of his life to the restoration of the lido, described becoming an honorary graduate as a "great honour".

Earlier in his career, the former professional swimmer spent time training at Broomhill Lido and would go on to represent Great Britain at the 1960 Rome Olympics.

He said: “Having been lucky enough to have trained at Broomhill, I was spurred on to resurrect this wonderful, fabulous place.

“Broomhill Lido is in people’s hearts; it wasn’t hard for me to adopt it as a crusade. I feel everybody is behind it.”

Broomhill Lido is set to reopen in 2026 after funding was secured from the Heritage Lottery fund with extra support from Ipswich Borough Council.

At the graduation ceremony on Tuesday, Mr Read offered advice to graduates.

Someone has to get to the top so why can’t it be you?” he said.

“Never give up. Do what you love and love what you do.

“Nothing great is easy. If you are hoping to succeed, I encourage you to take note of that.”
