Two students at a school near Ipswich have been selected for a highly esteemed youth sailing squad - making them two of the most promising sailors in the UK.
Harriet George, Year 13, and Toby Smith, Year 12, study at the Royal Hospital School in Holbrook near Ipswich.
The pair have earned spots in the highly esteemed Athena U21 Squad, which is known for nurturing elite sailing talent, offering them the opportunity to train and compete at a higher level.
Their selection follows impressive performances during the Waszp National Championships this summer.
Toby's sailing journey began when his father took him out on the water - initially meant to be a one-time experience.
However, this soon became a regular activity for Toby, who went on to compete at club level before progressing on to regional, national and international tournaments, competing in countries such as Sweden and Portugal.
He said: "Looking ahead, my sights are set on the Waszp Worlds in 2025, which will mark my first year with the Athena squad.
"Being part of the Athena squad has opened up potential opportunities, such as the Youth America’s Cup, while also deepening my understanding of the technical side of sailing - something I've always been passionate about."
Harriet comes from a family of avid sailors and would spend several summers sailing, leading to her joining winter training squads.
She said: "I’m really happy to have received the news, especially after working so hard over the summer to requalify.
"It feels like a big step forward, bringing me closer to my goal of becoming a professional sailor, whether that's in the America's Cup or another team.
"My main focus this year is to improve as much as I can ahead of the Worlds in Weymouth next year."
Ed Sibson, director of sailing at RHS, added: "Harriet and Toby’s achievements are a testament to their hard work, resilience, and passion for sailing.
"Their selection for the Athena Under 21 Squad is a remarkable honour, and we look forward to seeing them continue to excel in this exciting next chapter of their sailing journeys."
