Witnesses have described the crash which happened outside a Tesco convenience store near Ipswich town centre as "like something out of a movie".

Emergency services were called to the Tesco Express on the corner of St Matthew's Street and Civic Drive at about 1.35pm on Thursday.

A car left the road and crashed through a barrier before hitting the Tesco store.

A spokeswoman for the East of England Ambulance service had said that the driver was taken to Ipswich Hospital for further care.

On Friday, a barrier was put in front of the building - with some shards of glass remaining on the ground nearby. Sheet material was also used to cover the section that was hit.

John Colt had witnessed the incident take place as he was walking in the area on Thursday afternoon.

He said: "It was like something out of a movie, where the car seemed almost on autopilot as it was at the roundabout before it crashed into the building.

"It was not a high-speed crash, but scary and surprising nonetheless."

Moshin Khan, another witness, echoed Mr Colt's sentiments and said: "It's never normal to see a car leave the road like that and head straight towards a building.

"Hopefully no one else was injured by the crash, and I just hope that the driver is doing better and is taken care of at the hospital."

A worker at the grocery shop across the road said that they too had witnessed the crash take place, adding: "I was surprised and taken aback slightly, but I am glad at the pace with which the emergency services came through and addressed the incident."

After the incident was reported the police had set up a cordon around the vehicle, while traffic continued down the roads, although with delays, and Tesco Express remained open for the rest of the day.

The crashed vehicle has since been removed, while the broken window had timber put over it.
