A rise in thefts from cars is believed to be the work of known prolific offenders.

Inspector Naomi Lofthouse said Suffolk police is seeking court orders including criminal behaviour orders to crackdown on offenders once they are released in the wake of further incidents.

The officer spoke to this paper following two more incidents in Humber Doucy Lane and Hening Avenue last week.

Inspector Lofthouse said: “When we take action against these offenders by arresting them, charging them and remanding them, we see the numbers drop.

“Then when, they come out of prison again, we see the numbers rise so it's a bit of a cycle for us."

She added that the thefts were "sporadic" but that officers were focusing on incidents in the Chantry area as well as a number one priority for the west of Ipswich.

Inspector Lofthouse said: “Our plea to the public and the community is that we need that basic crime prevention to be done. So please lock your vehicles at night. Please, remove your valuables because what we've got is the offenders, going around at night and simply trying door handles.

“And then when they come across a car that's unlocked, they are entering and taking whatever's there.

“Although the value can be quite low, it's the thought of somebody being in your personal space and and intruding, really.

“If we can eliminate those easy opportunities, then we are going to see our numbers come down.”
