A series of magical moments and lifelong wishes were granted at the weekend as part of a special celebration event.

The Once Upon A Time event at Avocet Court Care Home in Monmouth Close was a magical experience for residents, families and members of the local community on Saturday.

The day marked the home's 10th anniversary and as part of Athena Care Homes' Making Moments campaign residents were encouraged to share their wishes.

Sylvia Ratcliffe who has been a resident at Avocet Court for the last three years asked for a ride in a horse drawn carriage.

She said: "It was absolutely amazing—I certainly never thought anything like this would happen for me. And to share it all with my family and everyone at Avocet Court was like a dream come true. A big thank you to everyone who helped make my moment happen.”

The carriage was one of many special highlights during the day as the home was turned into a wonderland of activities and entertainment thanks to the combined efforts of staff and residents.

One resident Joan organized a fairytale reading corner offering timeless classical stories for children and residents alike.

A place for photographs was available called Snow White's garden designed by Jill Calver which featured artwork from Gina Fox from the laundry team.

Robin Hood's archery area was set up with Andy Lawson from the lifestyles team taking on the role of Robin Hood leading a crossbow experience that was popular with both young and old.

Hunt the glass slipper was an interactive scavenger hunt around the grounds of the home where participants searched for Cinderella's missing glass slipper.

There was also a Disney dress up with staff and visitors dressing up as a range of characters including Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Belle, Princess Merida from Brave and even a Minion. Those in costumes mingled with guests and posed for photographs.

A key aspect of the event was community involvement which included a colouring competition run in partnership with Hillside Primary School with residents choosing the winner.

Home manager Ruth Garnham was delighted about the success of the event and the positive atmosphere on the day.

She said: "Once Upon a Time was a completely new idea for a community event here at Avocet Court, and it was an amazing way to celebrate Sylvia’s wish and Athena Care Homes’ birthday.

“The sun shone, and there was a fantastic atmosphere. I have to say a huge thank you to all the fantastic team here at Avocet—so many members of the team dressed up and had a great day.”
