Anglian Water are carrying out the urgent works on the road while it is closed, diverting drivers 11 miles, adding around 20 minutes to their journey time.
The diversion route will take drivers along the A137, Stutton Road, Manningtree Road, Holbrook Road, Primrose Hill, the B1080 and B1456 and vice versa.
The road closure joins the disruption near the bridge as National Highways closed one lane of the carriageway on the Orwell Bridge after a "potential defect" was found during an inspection.
