A 303 home development on the former HMS Ganges base has welcomed its first homeowners.

Gillian and Eion Atkinson have left their old life in Witham, Essex, to start anew at Barrelman's Point, along with their dog Stan.

The Shotley development is constructed on the old Royal Navy training base where 160,000 recruits passed through in its history and will provide 303 new eco-focused houses.

The couple decided to relocate after their son settled in Colchester, swapping their two bed house in Essex for a new four bedroom house.

Mrs Atkinson, 55, is an insurance administrator who spends most of her time working from home but chose to settle at Barrelman's Point for it's proximity to Essex, location and history.

She said: "Our 30-year-old son is settled in Colchester, so when my dad and then my mum sadly passed away, we felt the time had come for a fresh start and lifestyle change, away from the busyness of town life in Essex.

"When we visited Barrelman’s Point in early 2023, our mind was made up on the spot. The sailing community, beautiful walks, and local pub were just what we were looking for.

"Quite a few people who are looking to move here have a connection back to the HMS Ganges days and we’re enjoying learning more about the fascinating history of the site.”

The development is owned by Wavensmere Homes who were granted planning permission on a number of conditions including the restoration of the historic 142 feet mast.

Earlier this year, to mark the 60 anniversary of the beginning of their training, six former Royal Navy servicemen visited the mast and the rest of the development.

When finished the development at Barrelman's Point will be made up of 303 two-, three-, four-, and five-bedroom houses and will cost over £130m.
