Work to fix a leak in Ipswich which has been spraying water into the air for three months could finally begin today.

The leak in Sandpiper Road in the Chantry area has failed to attract any Sandpipers, small wading birds after which the road is named.

But ingenious  local children have used the leak to create a water play park complete with paddling pool.

At last, Anglian Water, which claims to Love Every Drop, says it is due to start work on fixing the leak today.

Concern about the leak, which has been spraying water onto the pavement causing disruption for residents, was first raised three months ago.

Barbie Lindsay, a resident on the road, said: "Someone was sent out to inspect it but nothing has been done so far.

"We weren't able to report it again as it stated work was in progress on the site.

"Local children have been using it as a water park. It's an utter disgrace."

The leak is where garages once stood but these were knocked down nearly 30 years ago.

The water pipes were left live in the area despite not being needed anymore.

Residents on the street have been informed by Anglia Water that someone is due to come to fix the leak and turn off the water to put an end to the spray.

Anglia Water stated that the leak is on a private supply pipe which is on Ipswich Borough Council land and as such is the council's responsibility to fix.

Anglia Water have offered to repair it, however, as a "goodwill gesture and take the opportunity to remove the unnecessary connection too".

Work to fix the issue and remove the connection is due to commence on September 4.

Ipswich Borough Council said: "As soon as the council were made aware of this leak, we were in contact with Anglian Water as they are responsible for the pipes.

"Anglian Water have carried out a temporary repair but still need to return to complete a permanent repair.

"We continue to liaise with Anglian Water to express our desire that this matter is resolved as quickly as possible."
