An Ipswich Co-op will shut its doors for the final time this week.

The East of England Co-op in Cauldwell Hall Road will cease trading on Saturday.

Earlier this year notices were put up on the door of the shop making customers aware that the store will be closing down

The signs said that employees in the shop will be offered jobs at other Co-op shops in Ipswich.

The post office which operates from the store will also close on Saturday.

The notice on the door stated: "Our business is going through a portfolio reshape, opening new stores and refurbishing existing ones, as well as consolidating and closing some locations.

"We would like to say a huge thank you to you, our members and customers, and to the team at this store for the service they have provided over the years."

It is the second Co-op store in the town to close after the Rosehill branch shut earlier this year.

A new Co-op store is set to open in the former ticket office at Ipswich Railway Station.

The store has applied for premises licence to enable the sale of alcohol on and off the premises.

This has raised concerns with the Suffolk Constabulary and residents in the area that live near the station.

Suffolk Constabulary stated they were not against the application, but have concerns about the sale of alcohol, particularly during home and away Ipswich Town games.

They have requested that, if the application is approved, conditions are applied that on the days Town play, whether it be home or away, sales of alcohol will be restricted to four cans or bottles or a single litre bottle per customer.

21 residents signed a petition to not grant the application on a number of grounds.

The application will be discussed by Ipswich Borough Council on Wednesday.
