A map showing the route of a 356-tonne generator which is set to cause huge disruption throughout Ipswich and mid Suffolk this weekend has been revealed. 

The transportation of the 81m abnormal load will take place between Ipswich and Eye Synchronous Condenser Plant in Yaxley on Sunday and is set to cause serious disruption between 6am and 6pm.

The movement will see the closure of Derby Road, Tomline Road, and St Matthews Street in Ipswich.

This will be followed by a rolling roadblock on the A14 and the closure of the A140 along with various parking restrictions and various temporary stop points along the route.

A map has now been released of the route the abnormal load will be taking, alongside a police escort and traffic management teams.


The escort will follow a route from Ipswich Docks at around 6am travelling along Cliff Quay, Duke Street, Fore Hamlet, Felixstowe Road, Foxhall Road, Crown Street, Norwich Road and along to the A14 at Claydon. 

The load is expected to arrive on the A14 eastbound between approximately 10am to 10.30am.

Then, from approximately 11am to 6pm the A140 is expected to be closed to allow a temporary overbridge to be built at Brockford.

There will be suspension of double yellow lines along the following roads in Ipswich:

  • B1458 Cliff Road (from Toller Road to Ship Launch Road)
  • B1458 Duke Street (from John Street to A1214)
  • A1156 Fore Hamlet
  • A1156 Bishops Hill
  • A1156 Felixstowe Road (from Bishops Hill to Derby Road)
  • B1075/59 Tomline Road
  • B1075 Foxhall Road (from Tomline Road to Newton Road and from Ruskin Road junction to Grove Lane, Ipswich)
  • B1075 Grove Lane
  • A1156 St Helens Street (from Grove Lane junction for 60 metres west and from Regent Street to St Margarets Street, Ipswich)
  • A1156 St Margarets Street
  • A1156 Crown Street
  • A1156 St Matthews Street,
  • A1156 Norwich Road (St Matthews Street to Cumberland Street, Ipswich, from Wellington Street for a further 30 metres northbound and from Anglesea Road to Old Norwich Road, Ipswich)

There will also be temporary parking restrictions on the following roads:

  • B1458 Cliff Road
  • B1458 Duke Street
  • A1156 Fore Hamlet
  • A1156 Bishops Hill
  • A1156 Felixstowe Road - from Bishops Hill to Derby Road
  • Derby Road - from Felixstowe Road to 40 metres south of Tomline Road junction
  • B1075/59 Tomline Road
  • B1075 Foxhall Road
  • B1075 Grove Lane
  • A1156 St Helens Street
  • A1156 St Margarets Street
  • A1156 Crown Street
  • A1156 St Matthews Street
  • A1156 Norwich Road
  • A140 Ipswich Road, Yaxley
  • A140 Ipswich Road, Eye
  • A140 Norwich Road, Mendlesham (layby only)

There will also be a suspension of overnight 7.5t Weight Restrictions on the following roads:

  • A1156 Fore Hamlet
  • A1156 Bishops Hill
  • A1156 Felixstowe Road from Bishops Hill to Derby Road
  • A1156 Norwich Road from A1214 to Bury Road, Ipswich
  • A1156 Bury Road from Goddard Road East roundabout to Norwich Road
