A 24-year-old man has been bailed after a "suspicious" house fire in Ipswich.

Emergency services were called to Portman Road at about 5.20am on Tuesday to reports of a house fire.

A police cordon remains in place around the property while the investigation continues.

A spokesman for Suffolk police said six people were in the property at the time and managed to escape.

Four are uninjured, but two people – a man and a woman - were taken to hospital for treatment for leg fractures after jumping from an upstairs window, and also for smoke inhalation.

Police and the fire service helped evacuate a further 11 people from neighbouring homes as a result of the blaze.

The man has now been bailed until November 12 2024.

Residents living in the area awoke to sirens and a large emergency presence on Tuesday.

Mrs Begum, a resident in the area, said: "I heard a noise at around 4.45am. This area can not be very nice at times, there's sometimes fighting and a lot of noise being made. That's what I thought it was initially, and then when I heard sirens I thought it was a fight.

"I opened my door to have a look and saw police, fire service, ambulance and then I saw the house and the smoke coming from it and thought it was really bad."

Other residents described seeing "very big flames" and smoke.

David Ellesmere, Ipswich Borough Councillor for the Gipping Ward area, said: "Our thoughts are with the people who were in the flat in what must have been a very frightening experience for them.

"We are glad there doesn't appear to be any serious injuries and the Borough Council will be giving any assistance we can to both the police and the fire service in their investigations."
