An Ipswich road remains closed while police continue a murder investigation.
Emergency services were called to Burrell Road, close to Ipswich railway station to reports of a stabbing at about 7.10pm on Tuesday.
Officers attended the scene and found a woman who had suffered serious injuries.
A 26-year-old woman died a short time later in hospital after being fatally stabbed.
A number of police cordons were in place throughout Wednesday including Willoughby Road and a road closure in Burrell Road.
The road remains closed this morning as police continue to investigate the incident.
An Ipswich man, 27, was arrested on Wednesday in the town on suspicion of murder and taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre where he will be questioned by detectives.
On Wednesday officers found two knives near the scene of the investigation.
There will continue to be a big police presence in the town in the coming days.
Residents living close to the scene described that disbelief and shock after hearing the news of the fatal stabbing.
Councillor Phil Smart for Bridge Ward at Ipswich Borough Council said: "This is a truly horrific incident, and our thoughts go out to the victim and those close to her."
Anyone with information related to the incident is urged to contact Suffolk police, quoting CAD 330 of August 6.
