An Ipswich care home held an Olympics-style event, embracing a fun-packed day of sports with the community.

Inspired by the ongoing Games being held in Paris, the residents along with the staff at Asterbury Place, which is run by Care UK, invited folk for a day filled with games and family fun.

The community gathering was part of The Big Care UK Sports Day initiative that saw more than 130 care homes across the country host similar entertaining events.

Guests indulged in the games to bag their own gold medals.

The agenda for the afternoon included traditional sports like egg-and-spoon races, table tennis, and bean bag toss.

There was an accompanying summery vibe with a mouth-watering barbecue prepared at the home.

The crowd enjoyed this while being entertained by a local artist, Sean Saye.

Sheila, a resident at Asterbury Place said: “It’s been an amazing day.

"The family day was just that, a family day with a great atmosphere. I enjoyed watching the sports day and taking part in the egg and spoon race.

"My favourite sport is diving and swimming and I will enjoy watching that on TV."

The fun day was hailed by the home manager, Victoria Barber.

She said: “Summer sports days are always a highlight for us, as not only is it a fun opportunity to compete in light-hearted games with team members, but provides an opportunity for us to welcome the local community and see what life is like here at Asterbury Place.

"This year’s event provided plenty of laughter and enjoyment for all involved and it was great to see residents meet and mingle with lots of new faces – and some familiar ones – while keeping active."
