A Suffolk councillor has warned that planned works on A14 would be a "death knell" for a village near Ipswich.

Cllr Christopher Hudson represents Belstead Brook at the Suffolk County Council, where he was informed of plans by National Highways for works on the A14 between J52 (Claydon) and J55 (Copdock).

National Highway said that they plan to start work on August 27 and are expecting a six to eight-week closure from 8pm to 6am as the junctions need repair to extend their life.

They added that plans for these works are still being discussed and are attempting to reduce disruption for residents.

However, Cllr Hudson believes that these plans would affect Sproughton, as heavy loads will be diverted onto the village's high street which is surrounded by houses and parked cars.

Cllr Hudson said: "The last time people were up all night because of the sound that the cars and trucks were making.

"Such a diversion is also dangerous for people in Sproughton, as the last time they did this a young girl was nearly injured.

"This will be a death knell for the village."

A National Highways spokesperson said: "Repairs are needed to extend the life of the road surface to minimise the need for more extensive repairs in the future in addition to reducing road surface noise."

"Unfortunately this will involve diverting traffic along the B1113 through Sproughton.

"We are working with our traffic management contractor to help mitigate any speeding and reduce disruption to local residents."

Cllr Hudson said he would like to see the traffic diverted elsewhere and have rules implemented that do not allow heavy good vehicles to travel through Sproughton.

He added that in 2021 a boat was brought through the village, and hopes that restrictions are placed to mitigate such incidents.

"If the works are approved this will cause an uproar among the community," the councillor said.

The decision will be taken after a meeting between the highway and the county council next week.
