A detective has commended the "courage" of a rape victim and spoken of the "traumatic" impact of the trial following the sentencing of an Ipswich man.

Abdulay Espirito-Santo, 34, of Rendlesham Road, was found guilty of rape and assault and sentenced to eight years in jail at Ipswich Crown Court last Friday.

The court heard that Espirito-Santo lifted up the victim's dress, removed her underwear and raped her on a bed while grabbing her throat and pulling her hair.

After the incident, the victim attended her friend’s house with injuries to the face and throat.

Detective Constable Chloe Bilner, the investigating officer, said: “The victim made it very clear to Espirito-Santo that she did not want sex because he didn’t have a condom.

"Despite her clear protestations, he forced himself on her, pulling her hair and grabbing her throat so hard that she was unable to speak properly for a few days.

“It would have been very traumatic for the victim to have given evidence during the trial so I thank the victim for her courage, patience, although what Espirito-Santo did will understandably never leave her.”

Last week, the victim told the court: “I would have flashbacks which would cause me to be scared and upset.

“I have been very anxious, and struggle emotionally and really worry now about trusting people and feeling safe in relationships."

Police say the victim received support from an independent sexual violence advisor who assisted her throughout the investigation, legal process and court case.

Suffolk has a dedicated Sexual Assault Referral Centre and a team of specialist independent sexual violence advisers who can support victims who come forward to report rape or serious sexual offences.
