Ipswich Borough Council has said it is moving to tackle homelessness by providing more support services and accommodation in the Suffolk town.

The borough has responded to Suffolk County Council's reduction in housing support by putting together support services and accommodation for vulnerable people.

The council says it has supported 176 rough sleepers into accommodation and prevented more than 2,000 households from becoming homeless in the last three years.

Alasdair Ross, Ipswich Borough Council portfolio holder for housing, said: “Ipswich Borough Council is committed to supporting people to live independent, healthy, and fulfilled lives.

"This includes ensuring support is available to anyone who might be at risk of being homeless and, crucially, that individuals can be supported for a variety of issues.

“Whether we decide to work independently or along with our district councils, we hope by developing a new temporary housing model we can better manage demand and help meet the housing needs of some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.”

The council is proposing temporary accommodation for those who need the support in order to get off the streets.
