An innovative summer reading programme for primary school children has been initiated by Suffolk Libraries.

The enticing activity, named 'Reading Quest', aims to engage young readers, their families and the larger community in reading-related activities throughout the summer.

The programme, sponsored by the burgeoning nursing agency, Advantage Angels, involves both reading for pleasure and participation in various 'quests'.

These quests include activities such as 'reading under the covers with a torch' and 'choosing a recipe book and making something together as a family'.

The efforts of Advantage Angels have enabled the organisation to create colourful, free resources for children to inspire their reading adventures.

Children will be able to visit their local library from this Saturday to get a Reading Quest map, and can look forward to weekly rewards for continuous participation.

Suffolk artist, Anna Lindsay, based the map on regional myths and legends, adding a touch of community flavour.

Suffolk Libraries children’s librarian, Erin Hamilton, said: "Reading Quest will hopefully encourage children to explore our libraries and their Suffolk surroundings and it’s something the whole family can enjoy.”

Advantage Angels' managing director, Mekala Hodgson, said: "We feel as a business it’s important to support the local communities of Suffolk and what better way than getting the children involved in what will be a magical reading quest adventure."

Research indicates that summer reading campaigns can help maintain children's literacy levels during holidays, preventing a slip in reading skills.

The campaign also encourages children to explore their nearby libraries, with many acquiring their first library card to participate.

Reading Quest is open to all children although it is primarily designed for those aged 2-12 years.

All 45 libraries across Suffolk are participating in the campaign, which is also accessible through mobile libraries and weekly pop-up library sessions.
