Drivers are being warned of delays on the A14 as a 470-tonne abnormal load is transported through Ipswich. 

Police say the large piece of equipment, which is 77 metres long, will be taken from Ipswich Port to National Grid's substation near Bramford on Sunday. 

The escort is expected to leave the Port of Ipswich at about 8am and will make its way to the A14 at junction 56 at Wherstead and then travel to junction 55 at Copdock.

Suffolk police say there will be a temporary overbridge built while the abnormal load travels along the A137 and the A14.

There will also be a rolling road block between junctions 55 and 56 eastbound on the A14 and the road will be temporarily closed while the convoy is in the carriageway.

The police escort route will be: Local Roads – A137 – A14 – A1214 – A1071 – B1113 – Bullen Lane – Local Roads to Site.

This comes after another 250-tonne transformer passed through the county last Sunday and caused the A14 to be closed.

Wherstead Road was also closed for the transformer to pass through last week.

Before the abnormal load last week, a National Highways spokesman said:  "Due to the complexity of moving equipment of this size, there will be disruption on the A14.

"To ensure there are no hold-ups, there will be some activities carried out ahead of the convoy, which includes the removal of carriageway signage."
