Ipswich power workers have been hailed for their hard work in transforming a charity's gardens.

The UK Power Networks control systems team used their volunteer days to clear and restore The Peoples Community Garden's habitats in a two-day effort.

Ian Hirst, operations manager for ActivGardens, the gardening arm of charity ActivLives, said: "Around five to six truck loads were cleared which amounted to 12-15 tons of green waste."

The work also included re-establishing habitats, attracting slow worms, lizards, and stag beetles.

Mr Hirst commended their labours, saying: "They really pulled all the stops out and really grafted".

The gardens are critical for community sustenance, providing produce for up to 65 families through a local shop.

ActivGardens also maintains Belle Vue Park and runs educational and mental health programmes.

Nathan Richardson, who organised the power team, said: "It was very interesting to find out about all the work the charity does, the amount of work that needs to be done to maintain it, and to see how we can, through our corporate and social responsibility, have a positive impact on the community.“
