Plans have been submitted to convert a warehouse in west Ipswich into a household waste recycling storage centre.
The land surrounding Gipping House in Hadleigh Road industrial estate has been used as a warehouse by several different companies to store their goods.
Ipswich Borough Council has been using the building to lead its operations on waste recycling from the site.
Now, with the director of growth at Suffolk County Council and agents Lisa Skinner Associates Ltd, a planning application has been submitted to the county council.
The application seeks to demolish a warehouse south of the borough council's office and remodel the area into a two-storey building that would serve as a welfare site.
The proposed site would store green waste, wood, metal and cardboard on its upper level before they are recycled.
Meanwhile, the lower areas would include smaller goods such as bottles, clothes and books.
Skips for rubble and plate glass will also be provided at the lower level, and containers for reuse items will be provided at both levels.
About 18 skips would be located at the site at any point, the application said.
The new site would employ four full-time workers, and the site would be operational from 6am to 10pm.
Gipping House was originally designed as a distribution warehouse and in the early 1990s was split into separate industrial units.
The site now comprises a large open-plan warehouse and office building that are used by Ipswich Borough Council for refuse collection, street cleaning, housing maintenance and highway operations.
To the south of the site, there is a tunnel that provides access to the rear of the building, to the west a canopy and loading bays and to the east are workshop buildings.
All of these locations would be re-modelled if the application is approved.
