An Ipswich library is set to reopen after closing its doors last month due to legionella concerns.

Chantry Library in Hawthorn Drive has been closed to customers since May 8, after bacteria was found in the water supply in parts of the site.

After tests were completed the library announced that they would re-open on Monday, June 17 at 2pm, with bingo games and social events.

A spokesperson for Suffolk Libraries, said: " We really appreciate the patience of customers during the closure.

"Staff have been opening up for a few hours a day during the past couple of weeks so people can collect reservations, and also running online story sessions on Facebook for families."

They added that they look forward to seeing everyone come back to the library.

This comes after a routine test showed the presence of legionella, which can cause a pneumonia-type illness known as Legionnaires’ disease, and a mild flu-like illness called Pontiac fever.

Chantry Library was swiftly closed, and a spokesperson said that “immediate steps” were taken to prevent anyone from accessing the affected water supply.

It was anticipated that the library would reopen on May 28, however, the opening was pushed back by two weeks, with tests showing further treatment being required.

Work was carried out on the library's roof during the closure.
