It was a milestone in history as Ipswich's iconic playbus Maggie trundled along for the final time to hand over the reins to the new bus in town. 

On Monday, there were squeals of delight from tiny Ipswich residents who were welcomed on board the new playbus, Dennis, for the first time.

Since 2003, Maggie has been driving a part of the town landscape. Much like an enormous preschool on wheels, Maggie has welcomed little ones on board for arts and craft, stories and boundless fun.

However, after 20 years of dedicated service, it was finally time for Maggie to retire. It was announced last year that Dennis, a former London bus would be stepping up to the plate to allow Maggie to enjoy her retirement.

There were smiles all round when Dennis opened his doors for the first time. There were some familiar sights, with well-loved toys and the slide that so many youngsters have enjoyed when visiting Maggie.

Playbus coordinator Mandy Potter was pleased to show us around, pointing out Dennis’ sparkling white walls and brand-new fixtures, including a bathroom complete with baby-changing facilities.

Soon, children were busy exploring and getting acquainted with Dennis. However, when Maggie pulled up alongside him, there were cheers from all aboard.

Maggie was the third Ipswich playbus. Her predecessor, an unnamed bus, is now a party-bus in America.

While no such glitzy retirement awaits Maggie, Mandy said that she is not quite ready to part with her yet.

“Maggie is going to be preserved – we couldn’t let her go, she’s an icon!” she laughed.

Maggie’s final destination is still being decided. Wherever she is, she will be enjoying a well-earned rest, safe in the knowledge that Dennis is at the helm.
