A fan from north Norfolk has vowed to give £10 to the Samaritans if Ipswich Town get promoted - and is urging others to do the same.

At the start of the season, Norwich City fan Tony Abigail, who lives in Worstead near North Walsham, set a wager with a stranger on Facebook.

Mr Abigail said that if Ipswich won promotion to the Premier League this season then he would donate £10 to the Samaritans.

But he said if the Canaries, the Blues' arch-rivals, go up then the person he made the bet with would donate the same amount to the Royal British Legion.

Ipswich Town are now a point away from getting an automatic promotion, meaning they need either a draw or a win against Huddersfield Town in Saturday lunchtime's game.

Mr Abigail said that if Ipswich do get promoted then he would be "left with an egg on my face".

“I decided that instead of donating at the Norwich Samaritans I will take some humble pie and donate to the charity in person in Ipswich,” he added.

Mr Abigail is also a season ticket holder at Carrow Road, who are currently in the fight for promotion play-offs and play relegation-threatened Birmingham City on Saturday.

However, he hopes that he is not the only person donating money to the Samaritans.

He added: “There could also be 25,000 Town fans who also donate a tenner to their local Samaritans and raise £250,000 for such a worthwhile charity.”

The money could help the Samaritans campaign to help young men’s mental health across the UK and raise awareness about suicide.

A Samaritans spokesperson said: “We are absolutely delighted by this gesture that will go a long way.

“We have worked with Ipswich Town and Norwich to promote the campaign ‘You Are Never Alone’ can help football fans all over, and this gesture really shows that.”
