Ipswich residents have expressed their concern at an application for a children’s home in Constable Road.
Plans submitted to Ipswich Borough Council by Compass Children’s Homes Ltd on March 7 suggest converting a large house into a home suitable for up to five children, with two further bedrooms for two members of staff.
A planning and heritage statement said that the building would “remain very much residential and akin to occupation by a large family”.
However, residents feel that this would not be an appropriate change, with many drawing attention to what they feel is a lack of adequate garden space.
“I am a senior educational psychologist,” one resident wrote. “I have deep concerns about the property being used for the proposed purpose, with regard to the wellbeing of the young people who may live there.
“The care home should be set within large grounds with generous gardens to enable the young people to have space and access to a range of activities. This is not possible [at the site].”
This was echoed by another resident, who wrote: “I would also question whether the location of the property in this part of town, so close to Christchurch Park and to the town centre, is suited to housing vulnerable children”.
Compass states on its website that their teams provide care for children and young people “who experience a range of behavioural and emotional difficulties”.
Several other residents have commented that the children’s home would necessitate visits from multiple social workers, educators and other professionals, adding to traffic and parking difficulties in the road.
The residents are being supported in their objections by Ipswich Borough councillor for St Margaret’s, Inga Lockington.
“It’s about finding good places for our children in care to live,” said Cllr Lockington. “It’s not good enough just to find a big house – you also need to have the outside space.”
However, one person expressed support for the plans. They wrote: “I am in favour of this application. It will provide a stable home-style environment for looked after children.”
