Traffic was at a standstill on the A14 Orwell Bridge after a lane was closed to carry out repairs this afternoon.
Police were initially called to a crash on the westbound carriageway outside Ipswich at about 3.20pm on Monday.
National Highways then installed a 40mph speed limit on the bridge on Tuesday morning due to damages caused by the incident.

Witnesses reported a lane being closed on the bridge this afternoon, causing traffic to be at a standstill over the bridge.
There were severe delays on the road with traffic queuing back as far as junction 58 for the A12 in the westbound direction.
On the eastbound carriageway, traffic queued past junction 55 for the Copdock Interchange.
