The potential closure of a 14-screen cinema in the centre of town is "hugely disappointing" says Ipswich residents and councillors, following the news it might be closing within a month.
Staff at Omniplex Cinema in the Buttermarket shopping centre, in Ipswich, have received an "at risk of redundancy" letter and says the business will close on or before March 24.
The cinema is home to Ipswich's biggest screen, and currently employs around 30 employees, all of whom are at risk of losing their jobs.
The news has been called "bad news for Ipswich town centre" with calls for parties to find a solution.
The site is the former Empire Cinemas but was acquired by the Irish chain in December 2023.
Terry Baxter, chair of Ipswich Central, said: "It is hugely disappointing that the Omniplex Cinema chain has decided to close its offering in Ipswich.
"The venue has such a unique place at the top of the Buttermarket Shopping Centre and is a great location for someone looking to establish a new entertainment venue in the town.
"Despite this news, films can still be enjoyed by Ipswich residents and visitors at Cineworld, Cardinal Park or the King Street Cinema in the town centre within the Corn Exchange building."
Ipswich Borough Councillor for Alexandra ward, John Cook, added: "The closure of the Omniplex cinema in the Buttermarket would be bad for the Buttermarket - and for other Buttermarket businesses - and bad for Ipswich town centre.
"I hope that the owners of both the Omniplex and the Buttermarket will get together and reach a deal which works for both parties and for our town."
The letter sent to employees highlights the "difficult decision" being made to close the branch.
A statement from Buttermarket said: "We are aware of recent inquiries regarding the departure of Omniplex Cinema from the Buttermarket Shopping Centre.
"At this time, we are unable to provide any commentary. We understand the interest in this matter and will provide a statement at the appropriate time."
