A former Suffolk bricklayer has described his 'total shock, excitement and elation' after scooping £120,000 in a competition and now plans to use the money to finish building his new home.

Witnesham man Alan Davies had entered the competition, run by 7days Performance, because the odds of winning were greater than with the lottery, but never expected to win the sum of money.

He started building the house, which is nearing completion, for his wife and himself ten years ago, but said the money would enable him to finish the project.

He added: "The news was a total shock and I have had the opportunity to share some of the winnings with my daughters and will go some way to finishing the final part of the build.

"I am looking to retire in a couple of years and the winnings could not have come at a better time. Having worked hard all my life I know how difficult it can be to bring up a family and provide a good home and consider myself very fortunate to have won."

As part of winning the competition, the Port of Felixstowe operations manager had a choice between the money prize or a Ferrari 488 GTB.

He said: "The call was a total surprise and at first I could not believe what I was actually hearing and it took a while for me to digest the information.

"The prize was a Ferrari 488 GTB or a cash alternative. Once reality sunk in, the heart said Ferrari and the head said cash alternative.  It was a difficult, but nice decision to have.

"The 7days performance team were great and I had the opportunity to meet them and sadly say goodbye to the Ferrari but the cash alternative is like a lottery win.

"Even today it is difficult to believe as we have never won anything before. Excitement, elation and a sense of being extremely lucky still exists today, nearly a week on."

To enter, he bought ten tickets costing 79p each, with the draw being made on January 14.
