The owners of businesses on a town centre street have expressed concerns about the impact on their deliveries after new parking restrictions have been put in place.

New double yellow lines are now in place across the edge of the kerbs on Upper Brook Street and Tacket Street.

A sign, warning “no loading permitted at any time”, has made local business owners worried about how they are going to manage deliveries to their shops.

Tak Cheung, the owner of Go East Ipswich, said he only discovered the new restriction on Sunday, November 12.

The independent shop owner added: “Those two roads are main business areas with establishments for both independent traders and national retailers.

“A lot of these businesses do not have alternative access for loading and unloading of goods other than these streets.”

Mr Cheung claimed that none of the traders were informed about the change, nor were any consultations carried out.

The business owner said: “How are our businesses going to function? How are we going to trade without daily deliveries, which often require trucks and couriers?

“These establishments employ people; if businesses fail, inevitably, redundancies follow.”

Mr Cheung added that this restriction is exactly the opposite of the steps that should be taken to attract more shoppers as well as businesses to Ipswich.

An Ipswich Borough Council spokesperson says: “Ipswich Borough Council carries out the enforcement of parking and loading restrictions in Ipswich on behalf of Suffolk County Council.

"The County Council are responsible for the provision of road markings and as such enquiries regarding the maintenance of the loading restriction kerb markings on Tacket Street and Upper Brook Street should be addressed to them.”

Suffolk County Council was approached for a comment.
