Flytippers have been ordered to pay out several hundreds of pounds after dumping waste in a town alleyway.

Costel Dinca and Mariana Iosup, both of Defoe Road, appeared at Ipswich Magistrates Court on Monday, October 23, after they had been caught twice dumping their household waste at the end of an alleyway on Defoe Road.

Ipswich Borough Council caught the pair illegally dumping waste on February 7 and March 3, 2023.

The first offence saw seven green bin bags and a cardboard box full of waste dumped on the side of the road by the couple.

Dinca and Iosup were then caught leaving a box full of household waste and two further full bin bags on the ground underneath the Defoe Road sign.

Councillor John Cook said: "Our waste enforcement team takes illegal dumping cases like this very seriously.

"We want to send a clear message to anyone thinking about illegally dumping waste in Ipswich, even at the end of your property, that we will take action against anyone caught doing so - no matter the amount of waste discarded."

The couple were found guilty and fined around £685 altogether.

Earlier this year, Ipswich Borough Council’s executive committee approved an increase in penalties for environmental offences, including littering, fly-tipping and the wrong disposal of household waste.

Fines for littering have been increased from £80 to £150.

That move was backed by litter campaigner Jason Alexander, who organises litter picks in Ipswich and wider Suffolk, said: "I think raising the fines for littering and fly-tipping will only have an impact if those laws are enforced."
