A 21-year-old illegal immigrant who repeatedly raped a woman in an Ipswich flat after plying her with alcohol and cocaine has been jailed for 11 years.

Before Ipswich Crown Court on Tuesday was Dekan Saed, who was living in Portman Road, Ipswich.

Sentencing Saed, Judge Martyn Levett said instead of taking the victim home as he had promised he had taken her to a flat in Ipswich and plied her with alcohol and cocaine before raping her.

Saed, who is originally from Iraq had denied raping, falsely imprisoning and strangling the 20-year-old woman during the early hours of Sunday, November 13 last year.

Following a trial earlier this year, a jury found Saed guilty of five offences of rape but cleared him of false imprisonment, strangulation, oral sex and assault by penetration.

In addition to being jailed he was ordered to sign the sex offenders register and was made the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order until further order.

In an impact statement read to the court by the victim, she said she had been left traumatised by what Saed did to her and giving evidence during his trial.

She said she had lost her job because of the time she’d had off work and had taken an overdose.

During his trial, Saed claimed the pair had been intimate but said they did not have sexual intercourse before he fell asleep.

When asked if he understood what rape was, he said: "In my country it is a really horrible thing. It is very shameful."

Lynne Shirley, for Saed, said her client continued to protest his innocence and was scared that if he was deported back to Iraq he would be killed.

She said that Saed, who has no previous convictions, had been in custody for nearly a year and had tried to kill himself.
