Hundreds of bottles just left in a car park when the nearest bottle bank is three minutes drive away has been called "unbelievable".

Despite signs asking people to not leave empty bottles in the car park hundreds have been left where the bottle banks used to be kept at the Warren Heath Sainsbury's in Felixstowe Road, Ipswich.

People are being asked to take their bottles to the Waitrose store in James Bennett Avenue, which is just a three-minute drive away from the Sainsbury's store.

Litter campaigner Jason Alexander said: "It’s unbelievable to see so many bottles left in this area.

"Yes, it used to be a bottle bank but a sign clearly states that the bottle bank is closed and the nearest is at Waitrose which isn’t too far away at all.

"But like those who litter there never seems to be a bin close enough.

"It doesn’t take too much litter or too many bottles to be left in a place before some see it as permission to do the same and before you know it we have scenes such as we see at Warren Heath.

"Come on Ipswich, we’re better than this."

A local resident described the sight as "disgraceful" on social media saying she "almost crashed the car" when she drove past the superstore.

Ed Thompson, East Suffolk councillor for Martlesham and Purdis Farm, which covers the Warren Heath store said that the littering of bottles "is not on".

He added: "It's horrible, really horrible. How can people do that?

"It's not very good. I would like to reiterate that people should be taking them to Waitrose or another place where they can be properly recycled.

"It's really not on to just leave them around because it is littering and there is another place where people can recycle them nearby."

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “We are working to clear the area as soon as possible and we are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”
