Plans to create a two-bedroom home in former hairdressers in Ipswich have been approved.

It was proposed in July to create a two-bed home at 15 Silent Street, which has been vacant since last year.

A design and access statement prepared by the Norwich-based Lewis and Tyrrell Architects said that the property has been vacant since October.

It explained: “The hairdressing business gave the owner notice that they were vacating the building in April last year (2022) due to retirement. The owner has been actively seeking new business tenants since April and so far, they have had 3 to 4 businesses showing initial interest, but then [decided] not to proceed any further.

“One of these was a taxi firm who would need a change of use to run their business, the others were retail based.”

The owner has since decided to “look at alternative residential options for this interesting building”.

Ipswich Borough Council gave the green light for the property to become a two-bed home on Tuesday.

Plans show that the ground floor, which was previously retail space, will have a lounge/diner and a kitchen, which opens onto a courtyard. A small bathroom and the boiler will also be located on the ground floor.

Meanwhile, the first floor will have a bathroom and one bedroom, while the second bedroom will be located in the attic space on the second floor. The two upper floors were formerly used as ‘treatment rooms’.

Numbers 15 to 17 Silent Street are Grade II listed and thought to date back to the 16th century.
