A flat in Tacket Street will soon be occupied by a hairdressing salon.

The first and attic floors of 24 Tacket Street have been used as a self-contained flat since 1999, while the ground floor is occupied by Renaissance Hair and Beauty salon.

Now, Ipswich Borough Council has given its permission for the upper floors of the building to be instead used by the salon.

A design and access statement submitted to the council explained that, when it was decided to convert the upper floors into a flat, an external staircase was built to give the new occupants access to their home.

The salon is part of a run of buildings in Tacket Street (22 to 26) which are considered historically significant Grade II listed.

A heritage statement explained that permission was now being sort to “restore the building to its previous state”.

It said: “There is no longer a requirement for the self-contained flat. The adjoining property has been converted into 27 apartments creating more than adequate domestic accommodation within the immediate area.”

In 2017, work began on Charlotte’s House, a development which saw the former First Floor Club transformed into town centre homes.

The heritage statement continued: “The client has a need to expand his service and therefore extending that use into his existing premises makes economical sense and ensures that the building is kept in full use.

"Vacating the property to larger premises could leave the building unoccupied and at risk of deterioration.

“This work will also bring the building back to where it was prior 1999."

Ipswich Borough Council gave its permission for the salon to expand into the upper floors of 24 Tacket Street on September 12.
