A 25-year-old Ipswich man who pulled out a knife after knocking on the door of a flat in the town has been given a suspended prison sentence.
Ricardo Harrison was carrying a box when he went to a ground floor flat in Barnard Square and had pulled a kitchen knife out of the box when the door was opened, Ipswich Crown Court heard.
Harrison had brandished the knife and there had been a stand-off followed by a fight between Harrison and a man who came out of the flat with a knife, said Robert Levack, prosecuting.
Harrison, of Dunlop Road, Ipswich, admitted having a knife in a public place in July 2021.
He was given a nine-month prison sentence suspended for two years and a 35-day rehabilitation activity requirement.
He was also ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work.
Sentencing him, Recorder Jeremy Benson said that when people carried knives there was a real risk of things becoming heated and someone ending up dead.
Peter Spary for Harrison said the background to the offence was a love triangle and on the day of the incident Harrison had gone to the flat to get his passport.
He said Harrison had stayed out of trouble since the offence.
