Business leaders are backing a proposal to extend powers towards curbing disorderly drinking in the town "to help promote a safe and welcoming feel to our town centre".
Ipswich Borough Council has begun consulting the public, businesses and police about extending the current Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) which covers antisocial behaviour related alcohol consumption in Ipswich.
A PSPO does not affect those considerately enjoying a drink in a public area or park.
Among the questions asked is if the order will have a positive, negative or no impact at all on different living, working and visiting the town.
Suffolk Constabulary made a request to the council to extend the order for a further three years as the current PSPO is due to expire on November 18.
So far in 2023, there have been 27 incidents relating to alcohol related anti social behaviour.
Among the supporters of the order's extension is Ipswich Central, which has expanded its street ranger team to four and committed more funding to the town's taxi marshal scheme.
ICM Chair, Terry Baxter said; “Our levy payers, be they retailers, those in the hospitality sector or those employing staff in the BID area are telling us that they want more done to help promote a safe and welcoming feel to our town centre.
"However, we know that the behaviour of a relatively small number of individuals affects the visitor experience for some, and we are committed to find ways to work with partners to crack down on repeat offenders.
"This latest initiative proposed by the local authority is welcome but it will only work if ALL who can influence its successful implementation are prepared to commit to it. In practical terms this refers to enforcement of the extended PSPO, more police officers, more PCSO’s more focus on driving the problem from the town. Ipswich Central is ready to play its part.”
The survey can be completed online under Ipswich Borough Council's current consultation and should be completed before September 12.
Councillor John Cook, Ipswich Borough Council portfolio holder for communities and sport, added: “The current Public Spaces Protection Order has assisted the Police to deal with alcohol related disorder in our town, while enabling the law-abiding majority to enjoy a drink within our parks and open spaces
"Residents and businesses now have an opportunity to have their say on a further three-year extension to the Order. I encourage everyone to have their say before the consultation closes on 12 September and urge support for it.”
