An Ipswich theatre has been named one of the most popular attractions in the world.

The Ipswich Regent has been awarded a 2023 Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Award.

Only the top 10 per cent of visitor attractions around the world are given this prestigious award. 

This accolade celebrates businesses that have consistently received great reviews on Tripadvisor in the last 12 months. 

Among the glowing reviews on the site include theatre-goers describing it as a "beautiful venue" and "a gem in Ipswich". 

Councillor Sophie Connelly, Ipswich Borough Council portfolio holder for culture and customers, said: "This is really great news for Ipswich Regent Theatre. Knowing that customers enjoy visiting and have completed positive reviews on Tripadvisor in the last year is fantastic.

"That the theatre can be celebrated amongst the top ten per cent of places to go across the world is wonderful, and, with plans underway to further improve the Theatre for customers, we hope these will achieve many more positive reviews."

This news follows the announcement that the theatre will undergo a significant refurbishment over the next year. 

The 1,551 seater theatre first opened as a ‘cine-variety hall’ in 1929. Up until the mid-1980s it offered both cinema and live entertainment.

In 1989 the theatre was purchased by Ipswich Borough Council and received front of house renovation before re-opening in September 1991.
