For those looking for a day out with the family or just on your own there are plenty of places worth a visit within an hour's drive of Ipswich. 

Here are five towns and villages you should consider for your next day out. 

1. Frinton-on-Sea

Travel time: 50 minutes 

Spend the day over the border in Frinton-on-Sea. 

There is plenty to do whether that is taking a stroll along the beach or walking down the high street. 

Other coastal towns such as Clacton are close by. 

2. Orford 

Travel time: 45 minutes

The "sleepy" Suffolk village of Orford was named as one of the most beautiful in the UK by The Telegraph.

The village has plenty of places to stay, eat and enjoy, including The Crown and Castle hotel and restaurant which was named one of the best to visit in the UK.

3. Long Melford 

Travel time: 42 minutes 

The south Suffolk village has a lot going for it and is one of Suffolk's up-and-coming foodie destinations

There is plenty to do with a number of great pubs and historic places to visit including Melford Hall and Kentwell Hall. 

4. Sudbury 

Travel time: 38 minutes 

Whether you come and take a stroll around the market or have a walk around the meadows there is something for everyone in Sudbury.

Take a look around the recently reopened Gainsborough House or take a browse in one of the many independent shops. 

5. Chelsworth

Travel time: 34 minutes

Chelsworth, nestled between Sudbury and Stowmarket in south Suffolk, dates back at least 1,000 years.

It is home to The Peacock Inn, which has been serving drinkers for about 400 years.
