Plans for an extension to an Ipswich community centre with a new sports space and climbing wall have been submitted to the council.

Murrayside Youth and Community Centre applied for permission to expand the building with a two-storey extension with a glazed link and to demolish the existing outbuilding.

The current building is a not-for-profit community centre used for teaching, counselling, sports, youth club, cooking, woodworking and meetings.

The centre’s spokesperson said: "Murrayside Community Centre goes from strength to strength, so much so that we need extra space for our community centre to cope with the demand from the youth contingent and from every other visitor and user of the centre.

"We are able to keep our activities affordable or free to access, the classes cater for all abilities and groups.

"We have not been negatively affected by the downturn in the economy but are able to cater for those that have, and as such we are keen to stay ahead of the curve and be best placed to offer as much as we can at Murrayside Community Centre."

The ground floor space of the planned extension would be converted into a gym and dance area.

The first-floor mezzanine would be made of steel and consist of sports equipment.

The application also includes plans for a new toilet and shower block, with access from the existing building.

Further access to the space would be via a conservatory link to the existing building.

A new climbing wall would also be set up on the north wall of the extension.

Floors in the constructed building would consist of concrete and rubber flooring, with steel stairs linking the ground and first floors.

The plans also include an additional job position for one employee, who would join the other two full-time members of staff.
