Demolition work has started on the former Staples building near Ipswich Town's Portman Road stadium.

As part of the Blues' refurbishment of the ground, the club are bringing down the building in Russell Road to make way for a new entrance to the South Stand.

The club acquired the land to the rear of the stand back in March 2022.

It is hoped that revamping the entrance to Portman Road will give it a better aspect for fans approaching the ground from the railway station.

Chief executive Mark Ashton had previously described the property as "basically a brick wall with a tin roof on it" as he outlined the Blues' plans.

The building opened in the 1990s and was a branch of Staples for many years, but the company went into administration and its warehouses were taken over.

The site was rebranded as Office Outlet – but it did not last long.

Ipswich Borough Council, based down the road at Grafton House, gave the proposals to bring down the building the green light.
