Community leaders across the county have paid tribute to a "dedicated" Suffolk principal who had "a great impact on thousands of people throughout her career, helping them realise their talents and ambitions".
Viv Gillespie, who held the role at Suffolk New College for seven-and-a-half years between June 2015 and January 2023, died on Friday, March 31, following a short illness.
"Viv had an enormous impact at each college she worked at during her 30-plus years in the sector, and it is with great sadness that we have learned of her passing," said David Hughes, chief executive at the Association of Colleges.
"Viv brought compassion and good humour to each of her roles and she was dedicated to supporting learners to reach their full potential and backed staff to help them achieve this.
"She worked tirelessly to ensure that further education was recognised as a valuable asset to producing a workforce fit for the future. She has had a great impact on thousands of people throughout her career, helping them realise their talents and ambitions.
"I would like to send my sincere condolences from everyone at AoC to her family, friends and colleagues."
During her time at Suffolk New College, Mrs Gillespie successfully navigated a period of great positive change that saw the institution join forces with Suffolk Rural, formally Otley College, and open two new ‘On The Coast’ campuses based in Halesworth and Leiston.
"This is incredibly sad news," said the Ipswich MP Tom Hunt.
"I had great respect for Viv. She worked wonders at Suffolk New College and Suffolk Rural.
"The life chances of many Ipswich residents were transformed as a consequence of her effective leadership."
Sophie Alexander Parker, chief executive of Ipswich Central, said on social media: "This is incredibly sad news.
"Viv was a huge support to the town and has done fantastic work heading up Suffolk New College.
"An inspiration. Our thoughts are with her family and all at the College."
