An Ipswich man who attacked a victim with a long metal pole outside a convenience store has been jailed.
Mihaita Ciuraru was sentenced to 40 months in prison at Ipswich Crown Court on Tuesday following an incident on July 20 last year.
The victim, a 44-year-old man who was known to Ciuraru, went to a convenience shop near Stoke Bridge.
As he walked out of the shop, he was attacked by Ciuraru from behind, who was wielding a metre-long metal pole.
The victim was hit twice in the head and on his body before Ciuraru dropped the pole and ran back over Stoke Bridge into the town centre.
The victim suffered serious head injuries that required 12 stitches and hospital treatment.
Ciuraru was arrested on January 7 this year and subsequently charged after fleeing the country to Germany.
Mihaita Ciuraru, of St John's Road, Ipswich, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent.
DC Jack Evans, of Ipswich CID, said: “This was an extremely aggressive and cowardly attack by Ciuraru on someone he knew.
"It was a busy time of day with vehicles driving past and numerous members of public witnessing the attack.
"I’d like to thank the members of the public who came to the victim’s aid at the time and who were willing to provide crucial evidence as witnesses.”
